Exeter Facts – Did you know…

Oldest Hotel
The city’s oldest hotel, The Royal Clarence Hotel, was built in 1769 and some parts of the building date back to the 1500s.
Even Older
The city has been ruled by Romans and kings and has a fascinating history. The cathedral dates back to 1050 while Exeter Guildhall is Britain’s oldest civic building and can be traced back to 1160.
Exet Stage Left
Famous people to have lived in the city include; Tommy Cooper, Michael Caines, JK Rowling and Chris Martin.
Deeper Underground
Under the streets of Exeter is a complex cave system that was built during the medieval period to bring fresh spring water into the city. Many of the tunnels and passageways still exist to this day.
That Old Black Magic
Alice Mollard was the last woman to be tried and hanged for witchcraft in Exeter in 1664.

Dating back to 250 BCE, Exeter is a historic city with a funky modern edge and vibrant business hub. Packed with independent shops and cafes, there’s a modern shopping centre, fast travel links, museum and street food market. In fact, there’s very little you won’t find in this gem of the South West.

Leisure

The city boasts a cinema and three theatres hosting a wide variety of performers and art. History buffs can explore the city’s Roman heritage and the stronghold of Dumnonia, part of the Celtic kingdom and there are also two castles. Little adventurers can go wild in Haldon Forest Park.

The locals enjoy a number of festivals throughout the year, which as locals we have regularly attended and can heartily recommend. Another great day out can be had at Pebblebed Winery which produces some of the UK’s finest wines.
