    Did you know…

    1. Teenage Heaven
      American rock ‘n’ roller Eddie Cochran died when a car he was travelling in crashed outside the town in April 1960.
    2. Phew!
      In 1998, 1,100 residents had to be evacuated when two unexploded World War II bombs were discovered.
    3. On Location
      The nearby village of Lacock has featured in a number of major TV shows and movies including Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, Wolf Hall and Pride & Prejudice.
    4. Doolittle
      Another fantastic local spot is Castle Combe. As well as it’s racetrack, it also hit the silver screen in the 1967 musical Dr Doolittle and Stephen Spielberg’s Warhorse.
    5. Characterful
      The names of several villages in the area sound more like characters from period dramas; Tytherton Lucas, Langley Burrell and Christian Malford.
    6. Charming
      But the best name award has to go to the delightful village of Tiddlywink.
    7. Gone Viking
      In 878 Alfred the Great and his army were beaten by the Viking King Guthrum at the Battle of Chippenham. After victory over the Vikings at nearby Edington, Alfred accepted Guthrum’s surrender at the site of his earlier defeat.
    8. Buttercross
      Believed to date back to 1570, Buttercross marked the original market square. It was later bought by a wealthy landowner who put it in his garden until it was saved and returned to the town by Chippenham Civic Society.

    Nestled in the heart of Wiltshire, on the banks of the River Avon, this market town is packed with history. Along with the weekly market, there are bigger high street names and retail parks.

    There are lots of green spaces, with well-maintained parks and play areas, public gardens and allotments to hire. Adventurers will find miles of pristine countryside, right on the doorstep.

    Leisure

    The town boasts a leisure centre, swimming pool, cinema, arts centre and a number of parks.

    Petrol heads can get revved up at Castle Combe Circuit that also hosts events throughout the year, along with track days and driving experiences. Bowood House and Gardens offer another great day out for all ages along with regular concerts and themed days.
