    Did you know…

    1. Cobblers!
      The city boasts the largest number of cobbled streets in the UK. After plans to switch to more modern paving came to light, locals rallied to save their streets, forcing the council to ditch their plans.
    2. Famous Folk
      Diver Tom Daley, swimmer Sharon Davies, Captain Robert Scott (Scott of the Antarctic), the first female MP Nancy Astor and dancer Wayne Sleep have all lived here. Philip Schofield got his first job with Plymouth Radio and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle practised medicine in the city.
    3. Ship Ahoy
      Famously the Pilgrims set sail to America in the Mayflower from Plymouth Rock but one lesser-known fact is, a large number of survivors from the Titanic were brought to the city after being rescued.
    4. Man Overboard
      Local man John Howland was a passenger on the Mayflower, becoming one of the first settlers in America. On route he fell overboard but was saved by the quick-thinking crew. His descendants include Franklin D Roosevelt, George W Bush and Humphrey Bogart.
    5. Sir Francis
      Sir Francis Drake was made Mayor of Plymouth in recognition of him becoming the first Englishman to sail around the world. Seven years later he secured his place as a national hero after defeating the Spanish Armada.
    6. Francis II
      Local lad Trever Francis made sporting headlines in 1979 when he became the first £1,000,000 footballer in a move from Birmingham City to Nottingham Forrest.
    7. Hello Sailor
      HMNB Devenport dates back to 1691, the navel base accounts for an estimated 10% of the city’s annual income.
    8. Greatest British Bake On
      The city is home to Jacka, the country’s oldest bakery.
