Portland – 7 Quirky Facts
- Don’t Say “Rabbit”
Among the superstitions on the isle (and they are many and wonderfully eccentric), it’s rumoured you should never say the word ‘rabbit’. This is due to the number of warrens that cross the island and it’s feared that mention of the “underground mutton” could cause Portland to collapse. - Smugglers Paradise
Owing to its location and remoteness, smuggling was rife on the island which has also housed several prisons and a naval base during its colourful history. - Jurassic Park
Portland is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site the Jurrasic Coast. Prehistoric fossils have been found on the isle and surrounding coastland. - Viking Raiders
The first recorded arrival of Vikings to Britain occurred in Portland in 789. Three lost Viking ships landed on the island and when the king’s reeve tried to collect taxes from them, they killed him and sailed on. - Buckingham Palace
The Queen’s London residence, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Cenotaph were made or repaired using Portland Stone. Six million tonnes of the local limestone were used to rebuild the city after the Great Fire of London in 1666. - Rufus Castle
The original Rufus Castle was built for William II by his father, William the Conqueror. In 1959 Henry the VIII had the current castle built at a cost of cost £4,964 to defend against French invasion.

Population – The Isle of Portland has a population of 12,000 (according to the most recent 2011 You.Gov census).
Transport – Portland is connected to Weymouth via the A354 which stretches on to Dorchester in thirty minutes, while Bournemouth is around one hour and fifteen by car. Buses run to Weymouth roughly every ten minutes. Direct trains to London Waterloo take approximately three hours and twenty minutes.

About Portland
Windblown, quirky, beautiful and remote, Portland is as romantic as it is idyllic. Not as easily accessible as other Dorset location, the lack of traffic and fewer tourists only add to the isle’s many attractions.
Leisure
There is an abundance of fine cafes, bars and eateries across Portland and of course the seafood is world class. When you’re not eating, you can burn off the calories exploring the coastline or taking part in the many sports available. The island might not be blessed with an abundance of shops (you won’t find the centre taken over by the usual high street names), what they lack in quantity they more than make up for in quality.
Portland also has a theatre/cinema with a brilliant mix of shows and screenings throughout the year.
Transport
With just one route connecting Portland with the mainland buses head to nearby Weymouth every ten minutes. Dorchester (thirty minutes and Bournemouth (75 minutes) are both easy to reach while there is also a rail station, trains to London take in excess of three hours.
