    Stalbridge – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. Stalbridge VIT*
*Very Important Town – Stalbridge was important enough to have been recorded in the Domesday Book. That might not sound like a big deal but Bristol, Winchester and London were not included in the record created by William the Conqueror, giving him a complete list of England and is considered one of the most important documents in English history. The chief aim of the book was to find who were the wealthy landowners in order to collect taxes.
    2. Nineteen
How important was Stalbridge? Well, at the time of the Domesday book it had 19 villagers. So it wasn’t very big. Reasons towns like London and Winchester may not have been collated is possibly down to wealthy barons simply refusing to give details to avoid paying taxes. After William’s death the project was abandoned by the following monarch, King Rufus.
    3. 1913 vs 2011
According to the Stalbridge Archive Group, in 1913 the town had a population of 899 and a total of 134 houses, that’s an average of 6.7 occupants per house. In the 2011 national census the population had risen to over 2,698 with 1,160 houses, creating an average of 2.3 occupants per house.
    4. Small But Proud
It’s not the size of your town that counts and Stalbridge might not have the largest population but it does hold the title of being the smallest town in Dorset.
    5. Hitchhiker’s Guide
Writer Douglas Adams wrote much of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy while living in Stalbridge. Adams was an enthusiastic environmental campaigner and once dressed as a giant rhino while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds to protect endangered species. The town itself was included in Thomas Hardy’s novel Wessex where ‘Stapleford Park’ is the fictitious name given to Stalbridge Park.
    6. Sir Walter Raleigh
It is believed that Sir Walter Raleigh lived in Stalbridge in the 16th century, the home was bought by the artist Sir James Thornhill and renamed Thornhill Park in 1725.
