    Romsey Facts
    Did you know…

    1. Early Days
The village came to prominence with the arrival of the Abbey in 907 CE. The Abbey brought visitors, wealth and unwanted attention. In 993 Vikings attacked the abbey and ransacked village.
    2. On The Market
King Henry granted Romsey’s charter in the 12th century, allowing the town a market which saw the population swell to over 1,000, making it a large settlement for the time.
    3. Dodgy
Another ‘royal link’ is King John’s Hunting Lodge. But the lodge was actually built after John’s death, and the name most likely a way to attract visitors and their wallets.
    4. More Trouble
In 1943, during the English Civil War, the town was attacked again by Parliamentarian troops who defeated the Royalist garrison and ransacked the town.
    5. Not Again!
The Royalists returned in 1644, kicked out the Cromwell’s men and… Ransacked the town.
They left in January 1645 and the town didn’t see any more troops until thousands of men were hidden in the area ahead of the D-Day landings, June 1944.
    6. Lord Mountbatten
Nearby Broadlands estate was home to Lord Louis Mountbatten. Great grandson of Queen Victoria, he had a distinguished career; First Sea Lord, Supreme Allied Commander in Asia, NATO Commander Allied Forces Mediterranean, youngest head of the British Armed Forces and last Viceroy of India.
