    Devizes – 8 Quirky Facts

    1. Anarchy!
Devizes Castle was attacked during ‘The Anarchy’, which isn’t a punk band but a period of history when war raged between Stephen of England and Empress Matilda.
    2. Cromwell
Sadly the castle was all but destroyed by order of parliament after the town was attacked and taken by Oliver Cromwell during the English Civil War.
    3. It’s A Sign!
Wadworth Brewery in the heart of the town, is the only UK brewery that still paints all its pub signs by hand. A sure sign that every one of their pubs is worth visiting (we’re gradually ticking them all off our own list!).
    4. Long List
A relatively small town, Devizes has over 500 listed buildings.
    5. On the Market
Devizes’ weekly market dates back to 1228, it stoically stayed open and served the town through WWII and the 2020 corona virus pandemic.
    6. Sailing Uphill
The 29 locks on the outside of Devizes allow boats to climb a height of 72 meters. That’s higher than Nelson’s Column, three times the height of the Angel of the North and taller than London Bridge!
    7. Roundway Hill
At the top of Roundway Hill is an Iron Age hill fort. The hill was also the site of a famous battle between the Royalists and New Model Army during the English Civil War. Yes, there have been a LOT of battles in the area.
    8. Historic Walk
Drop by the Wiltshire Museum in the town centre and you can pick up a leaflet that takes you on an historic walk through the town listing the various sites of interest.
