France Facts – Did you know…

    1. Snap Happy
The camera phone was invented in France by Parisian, Philippe Kahn in 1997. His first photo was of his new-born daughter.
    2. Made In France
The fabuleuse French also invented tin cans, hot air balloons, braille, hairdryers and the metric system.
    3. Not French
It should only be whispered for fear of revolution, but croissants aren’t French. They were actually invented in Austria in the 13th century.
    4. A Glass Act
The French consume an estimated 11.2 billion glasses of wine every year. Wine accounts for nearly 60% of the nation’s alcohol consumption.
    5. Not Very Romantic
In 1910 it became illegal to kiss on train platforms. Thankfully the law has long since been repealed, so travellers can pucker up without fear of penalty.
    6. No French Fries
Potatoes were also illegal. Considered only suitable as pig food, it was thought they caused leprosy and the humble pomme de terre was outlawed in 1748.
    7. The Awful Tower
Built in 1889 for the World Exhibition, the Eifel Tower was only supposed to stand for 20 years. Locals protested against it and demanded it be pulled down.
    8. Good Food
In 2016 it became illegal for supermarkets to throw good food away, instead any food due to be disposed of must be donated to food banks or other services.
