Putney Facts – Did you know…

    1. Putney Debates
In 1647, officers from Cromwell’s army met with MPs at St Mary’s Church to ensure a rich king wasn’t simply replaced by rich lords. The talks produced the basis of much of today’s common-law and were heavily copied by the American constitution.
    2. Game On
Outside the city, Putney Heath was a playground for London’s elite. In 1679 John Locke wrote; “The sports of England for a curious stranger to see are horse-racing, hawking, hunting, and bowling; at Putney he may see several persons of quality bowling two or three times a week.”
    3. The Heath
The heath was also a favoured spot for duels. In 1798, the sitting Prime Minister William Pitt, fought M.P. George Tierney after a heated exchange in Parliament. Both men shot and missed and it was agreed “that sufficient satisfaction had been given”.
    4. When all this was fields…
The rich fields were also used to feed London’s hungry and growing populace. A stronger bridge was needed to transport the crops across the Thames. This new bridge soon attracted the middle classes looking to move out of the crowded inner city.
    5. New Bridge
Built in 1792, Putney Bridge was only the second solid construction crossing the Thames (after London Bridge). The previous crossing was a crudely built by Parliamentarian troops during the English Civil War, wooden boards nailed to tethered boats to create a floating roadway.
    6. Get Over It
The current bridge, opened in 1886 by the Prince the Wales (later Edward VII), was constructed using London bricks and Cornish granite.
