    Maidenhead Facts – Did you know…

    1. The Kings Head
      Prior to his execution in 1649 following 7 years of bloody civil war, King Charles I met his children for the last time at the Greyhound Inn in Maidenhead High Street. A plaque commemorates the event.
    2. All Aboard!
      Maidenhead was the first terminus of the Great Western Railway. Isambard Kingdom Brunel was involved in the station’s construction and the first train to arrive at the station in May 1838, the North Star, was built by Robert Louis Stevenson.
    3. House of Horrors
      80 Hammer House of Horror movies were filmed in nearby Bray. Oakley Court’s gothic façade and interiors appeared in films like The Brides of Dracula, it was also the home of Frank N Furter in the high camp musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
    4. Olympians
      Maidenhead has produced a number of Olympians including gold winning Katherine Grainger and three-time equestrian gold medallist Sophie Christiansen.
    5. Posh Nosh
      Bray’s Fat Duck was voted the ‘best restaurant in the world’. The 3 Michelin starred venue is owned by culinary mad scientist, Heston Blumenthal.

      Prior to finding fame The Spice Girls lived in the town. Posh, Scary, Sporty, Baby and Ginger shared a house in Boyn Hill Road before becoming the biggest girl group in the world.
    7. Simply Red
      Redroofs was the former home of composer Ivor Novello. It was later transformed into the Redroofs School for the Performing Arts and has produced a number of famous faces including Oscar winner Kate Winslet.

    About

    Maidenhead’s roots date back to 100CE when it was a Roman settlement. Later it became the base for the Saxon warrior king, Taeppa.

    A hotel in nearby Clivedon was at the centre of the Profumo affair that brought down the government in 1964.

    Today this modern town has excellent transport links, charming independent shops and is surrounded by fantastic countryside.

    History buffs can explore the Heritage Centre. If you’re looking to enjoy the great outdoors you can head to Braywick Nature Centre and Cannoncourt Farm, an area of Special Scientific Interest. There are two golf courses, along with a riding centre and rowing club, which have both produced Olympic champions.
