Burford Facts – Did you know…

Name Game
The origins of Burford’s name is pretty easy; the Anglo-Saxon burgh, meaning defended/walled town and ford, a river crossing.
Golden Dragon
The Battle of Buford in 752 CE appeared in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. “… in Saxon Beorgford, where Cuthred, king of the West Saxons… met him (King Æthelbald) in the open field with an army and beat him, taking his standard, which was a portraiture of a golden dragon.” The dragon is now a common local symptom.
Early Days
By the time of the Domesday book (1086), it was still a small settlement, with 22 villagers, 18 smallholders, 3 slaves, 20 plough lands, 25 acres of meadow, 2 mills and a value of 13 pounds.
The Levellers
In May 1649 during the English Civil War Burford witnessed an uprising when 340 soldiers broke ranks from the Parliamentarian army demanding common rights for all men, a ‘level’ England. Cromwell himself told the men they wouldn’t be harmed, then had them attacked at night. Many ‘levellers’ were killed, the rest taken prisoner and the ringleaders hanged.
Graffiti
Bullet holes can still be seen in the church where the levellers took refuge. After being captured, they were held inside the church and the font bears the words, “Anthony Sedley 1649 Prisner”.
Levellers Day
On the second week of May a festival remembers those who lived and died championing social reform. Once a mostly political event, today it’s far more family friendly with a fun fair, live music, stalls and more.
