Ascot Facts – Did you know…?

    1. What Billy Wrote
In 1822 politician and pamphleteer William Cobbett described the area, “As bleak, as barren and as villainous a heath as man ever set his eyes on”.
    2. ‘Ow Much?!?
Today it couldn’t be more different and Ascot is in the top 20 most expensive places to live in the UK.
    3. Starters Orders
Each year, Royal Ascot attracts 300,000+ punters across 5 days who consume a whopping 240,000 cakes, 60,000 sandwiches, 56,000 bottles of bubbly, 44,000 bottles of wine, 21,000 bottles of Pimms, 5,000kg of salmon and 3,500 lobsters.
    4. Queen’s Winner
The famous racecourse dates back to 1711. The brainchild of Queen Anne, it was her link that gave it ‘Royal’ status. In 2013 a horse owned by Queen Elizabeth II became the first horse owned by a royal to win the Gold Cup.
    5. Wonky Cow
In one local legend, Side-hill Winder was home to a bovine-like animal which had two legs shorter than the others to help it stand on the uneven ground. According to the myth, if you chased it onto flat ground, it would simply fall over.
    6. Heroes
Ascot was visited by Sir Lancelot in Thomas Malory’s Astolat. Lancelot stayed with Sir Bernard whose daughter fell in love with the handsome knight, unfortunately her love wasn’t reciprocated and she died of a broken heart.
    7. Villains
The area was preyed on by highway men (and women) in the 1600 and 1700s.
    8. Good King Zog
King Zog of Albania lived in the town having been exiled from his homeland during WWII.

    Moving to Ascot – Information

How expensive is property in Ascot? Prices in the area are more than double the national average.

What makes moving to town so attractive? Easy access to London, good schools, stunning countryside and an abundance of impressive properties have put the town in high demand with house hunters.

Is there plenty to do? Newbies to the town really are spoilt for choice, a good theatre and live venues, great restaurants, parks and miles of countryside right on the doorstep.

    About

A short drive from Windsor Castle, Ascot is home to one of the UK’s biggest horse racing meetings, a major event on the royal calendar (HRH Queen Elizabeth had a few winners of her own over the years).

Ascot is one of the most sought-after places to live in the UK and house prices reflect this. Forming half of the Parish of Sunninghill and Ascot, it’s surrounded by beautiful countryside, and has excellent transport links. The are great amenities and a good selection of independent shops, pubs and cafes. Plus wonderfully eccentric local myths and legends for newcomers to explore.

    Leisure

While the racecourse might hog the limelight, golfers can enjoy Royal Ascot Golf Club and The Berkshire Golf Club plus Windlesham Golf Academy. There are two gyms, a tennis club, bowling, a small theatre in Sunninghill (linked to no lesser figure than Ivor Novello!) and in the summer months the racecourse holds a drive-in cinema and concerts.
