    Ascot – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. And They’re Off!
Royal Ascot races attract 300,000 punters over 5 days (that’s 5% of the UK’s annual racegoers in one single meeting!). 400 helicopters and 1,000 limos help transport some of the guests who will consume, 240,000 cakes, 56,000 bottles of bubbly, 60,000 sandwiches, 44,000 bottles of wine, 21,000 bottles of Pimms, 5,000kg of salmon, 3,500 lobsters, all served from over 100 food and drink outlets.
    2. Queen’s Winner
The racecourse dates back to 1711 and was created by Queen Anne which paved the way for its Royal status. In 2013 a horse owned by Queen Elizabeth II became the first horse owned by a royal to win the Gold Cup.
    3. ‘Ow Much?!
It’s one of the 20 most expensive towns to live in the UK.
    4. Isn’t That What’s-his-name?
Radio and TV presenter Chris Evans, popstar Sarah Harding (Girls Aloud), Marti Pellow (Wet Wet Wet) and two of The Beatles (John Lennon and Ringo Starr) have all lived here.
    5. Wonky Cow
A series of Bronze Age burrows once covered the area, an old legend tells of the Side-hill Winder, a bovine animal that lived on the side of the burrows. It had two legs shorter than the others to help it stand on the uneven ground. The tale recants how if you chased it onto flat ground its two sorts legs would cause it to fall over!
    6. Heroes & Villains
Highwaymen once prowled the area which was rich pickings due to the coach and postal road to London. It was also the romantic setting of a visit by Sir Lancelot in Thomas Malory’s Astolat. Lancelot stayed with Sir Bernard whose daughter fell in love with the handsome knight, unfortunately her love wasn’t reciprocated and she died of a broken heart.

    About

It’s one of the most sought-after places to live in the UK and house prices reflect this. It forms part of the Parish of Sunninghill and Ascot, surrounded by beautiful countryside and excellent transport links, the town has great amenities and a good selection of independent shops, pubs and cafes.

The town is split in two halves, Old Amersham packed with coaching inns, ornate buildings, pubs and cafes, and Amersham on the Hill which grew in the early 20th century.

    Leisure

While the racecourse might hog the limelight, there are other notable sporting facilities in the area including two golf courses; Royal Ascot Golf Club and The Berkshire Golf Club plus Windlesham Golf Acadamy. There are two gyms, a tennis club, bowling, a small theatre in Sunninghill (linked to no lesser figure than Ivor Novello!) and in the summer months the racecourse holds a drive-in cinema as well as outdoor concerts.
