A short drive from Windsor Castle, Ascot is the home of one of the biggest horse race meetings in the UK that has always been a major event on the royal calendar (Her Majesty has even had a few winners over the years).
Ascot is one of the most sought-after places to live in the UK and house prices reflect this. It forms part of the Parish of Sunninghill and Ascot, surrounded by beautiful countryside and excellent transport links, the town has great amenities and a good selection of independent shops, pubs and cafes. There are also some wonderfully eccentric myths and legends surrounding the town to tickle newcomers as part of the heritage of their new home.
The town is split in two halves, Old Amersham packed with coaching inns, ornate buildings, pubs and cafes, and Amersham on the Hill which grew in the early 20th century. It also houses the town’s hospital.
While the racecourse might hog the limelight, there are other notable sporting facilities in the area including two golf courses; Royal Ascot Golf Club and The Berkshire Golf Club plus Windlesham Golf School. There are two gyms, a tennis club, bowling, a small theatre in Sunninghill (linked to no lesser figure than Ivor Novello!) and in the summer months the racecourse holds a drive-in cinema as well as outdoor concerts.
With the M3, M4 and M25 all within easy each, Ascot has superb commuter links and by car you can be in the London’s West End in 1 hour. There are 2 airports in striking distance Heathrow Airport (21 minutes) and Gatwick (46 minutes). The fast trains take under an hour to London Waterloo.
