    Damerham Facts – Did you know…

    1. Our ‘enry
      Henry the VIII gave Damerham as a gift to Catherine Parr. The last of Henry’s wives, Catherine bred racehorses at Court Farm which has existed in one form or another for over 800 years.
    2. Haunted Ham
      Local legends tell of a ghostly stagecoach that gallops around the old pond at Court Farm. Another ghost at the farm can’t be seen but instead gives off a smell of pipe tobacco.
    3. Wiltshire Ham
      Until 1895 the village formed part of Wiltshire and was owned by Glastonbury Abbey. It’s also been the property of the 1st Earl of Salisbury, the Bishop of Salisbury and Alfred the Great.
    4. The Great Fire
      In the 1860’s a fire started in a home sited where Wath Cottage now stands. The fire spread quickly, destroying 32 houses and three farms. It occured almost exactly 200 after the Great Fire of London.
    5. Domesday
      At the time of the Domesday Book (1086), the settlement consisted of 14 villagers, 17 smallholders, 6 slaves, 38 freedmen, 3 pastures and 4 mills and was worth 45 pounds.
    6. The Great King
      In his willm Alfred the Great stated, “And it is my will that the community at Damerham be given their landbooks and their freedom to choose whatever lord as is dearest to them…”.
    7. Old News
      Two 6,000 year old tombs unearthed in the village are among the oldest structures in Britain.

    Close to the National Forest and steeped in history, Damerham is a much sought-after village, lying in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Both Henry the VIII and Alfred the Great considered it a special location. Other ‘locals’ include a ghostly carriage, and an invisible pipe smoking apparition. Featured in the Domesday Book, the village has one of the UK’s most ancient sites, containing two 6,000 year old tombs.

    Social life centres around a welcoming village pub, The Compasses Inn, that hosts live music events and has an excellent restaurant. There are local golf courses, riding centres and miles of stunning countryside to explore.
