    Damerham – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. Our ‘enry
Henry the VIII gave Damerham as a gift to Catherine Parr. The last of Henry’s wives, Catherine bred racehorses at Court Farm which has existed in one form or another for over 800 years. Some original timbers are still in the building and possibly date back even further as they had a previous life as ships’ timbers.
    2. Haunted Ham
Local legends tell of a ghostly stagecoach that roams the area. It is believed to gallop around the site of what was once an old pond at Court Farm. Another ghost is not seen, but a smell of pipe tobacco accompanies a ghostly presence.
    3. Not Wiltshire
Until 1895 Damerham was part of Wiltshire and owned by Glastonbury Abbey. It has also been owned by the 1st Earl of Salisbury, the Bishop of Salisbury, but perhaps most notable of all was Alfred the Great who bequeathed Damerham to his son and the town then passed down to Alfred’s grandson Athelstan, King of Wessex and the first King of England.
    4. The Great Fire
In the 1860s a fire started in a house where Wath Cottage now stands. The close proximity of houses and thatched rooves meant the fire spread quickly, in total 32 houses and three farms were destroyed. This was almost exactly 200 years after the great fire of London.
    5. Old News
At various times Damerham was a very important settlement. Two 6,000 year old tombs were unearthed and are among the oldest structures discovered in Britain. There is also a site named the Soldiers Ring in what was an area of Celtic farmland, rather than a site for soldiers, it is believed there were a Romano-British cattle enclosure.
    6. Domesday
Damerham was important enough to have featured in the Domesday Book of 1086. At the time it consisted of; 14 villagers, 17 smallholders, 6 slaves, 38 freedmen, 30 ploughlands, 26 acres of meadowland, 3 pastures, woodland and 4 mills. Its value was set at 45 pounds.
    7. The Great King
The town was also of importance to Alfred the Great. The King of Wessex and the man who created the vision of ‘Englaland’, stated in his will “And it is my will that the community at Damerham be given their landbooks and their freedom to choose whatever lord as is dearest to them, for my sake and for Ælfflæd.” Ælfflæd was the second wife of Alfred’s son, Edward the Elder, they had 6 children before he moved on to wife number three.
