Westbury Facts – Did you know…

    1. Two Princess
Both Prince William and Prince Harry passed their officer training in the town. Tests included an assault course, planning exercises and a physical which required 44 press-ups in two minutes. Phew!
    2. Battle of Edington
Just outside the town sits the site of one of the most pivotal battles in English history where Alfred the Great defeated the Vikings, saving the Kingdom of Wessex and building a future England.
    3. West Borough
The town’s name derives from the fact it stood to the west of Trowbridge. ‘Bury’ comes from burgh, a form of defended settlement, the same derivation as the German burg in cities like Hamburg.
    4. White Horse
Westbury’s famous white horse has been attracting visitors to the town since the 18th century. Visible from miles around, it stands close to the perimeter of Salisbury Plains.
    5. Vote Westbury!
In 1868 two businessmen and landowners Abraham Laverton and JL Phipps competed to become local MP. Phipps was accused of intimidating his workers and tenants into voting for him. The vote was overturned starting a long-running feud.
    6. Bad Blood
After John Phipps’ death, his brother erected a monument to him in Market Square and continued the spat. Laverton’s name can still be seen throughout the town.

    About

Once an important market town with a cloth and glove industry, Westbury held borough status and at one point had two MPs. It has played a vital role in England’s history, providing pivotal moments for British (and indeed world) politics and also a turning point in the very formation in the creation of England as a country.

Today a quiet town, it doesn’t have the biggest range of shops but it does have a busy and noisy events calendar including colourful music festivals and Christmas traditions.

    Leisure

Westbury has one of the country’s oldest swimming pools, there is also a leisure centre and a number of good restaurants. Shopaholics won’t find too much to get their plastic out for, but Warminster and Trowbridge both offer a wider selection of shops.

Westbury has a number of festivals including a vintage car show, summer festival, Christmas festival (both held in the market square), there is also the Westbury Festival with live music and performance, plus the Village Pump Festival that has hosted names like The Proclaimers, Bellowhead and Fishermen’s Friends.

Bratton Camp overlooking the white horse was the site of an Iron Age fort and today is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
