Fun Sussex Facts
Movie Magic
Opened on the 22nd of September 1910, the Duke of York cinema in Brighton is the oldest movie house in the UK. Once holding 800 guests, today 278 people can sit comfortably in the single screen auditorium.
Old Bones
The oldest remains of early man in the world were found near Chichester and have been carbon dated at over 500,000 years old!
Not Hastings
The battle of Hastings didn’t take place in Hastings, it actually took place 7 miles away on Senlac Hill. A small town grew beside the site which is (funnily enough) called Battle. Hastings Insurance isn’t based in Hastings either, that can be found along the coast at Bexhill. Hastings you little trickster!!!

Brighton’s Got Talent
Brighton has been home to some of the UK’s biggest stars. Simon Cowell was born there, Sir Paul McCartney, Adele, Steve Coogan, Noel Gallagher, Cate Blanchet, David Gilmour, and Holly Willoughby have all called Brighton home.
Bonfire Night
The biggest night of the year in the Sussex calendar is the 5th of November. Bonfire night is a big deal and Lewes, the county town of East Sussex, holds the UK’s largest bonfire procession with 5,000 marchers dressed in costume taking to the streets. Many towns in Sussex have connections to Bonfire Night including Midhurst, where Guy Fawkes lived and worked before his arrest for his part in the plot to blow up Parliament.
WWII
Sussex had been identified as a landing point by the Nazi war machine. Hitler reputedly wanted Brighton Pavilion as a home and much of the Sussex coast including Brighton, Cuckmere Haven, Camber Sands and Bexhill were no-go areas and lined with barbed wire, tank traps and heavy artillery.

About Sussex
Sussex by the sea has been in vogue since the Prince Regent made it his holiday hangout in the 1800’s. It has some of the UK’s most recognisable landmarks such as the Seven Sisters, Beachy Head, Brighton Pier and The Royal Pavilion. It’s also one of the most tolerant and forward-thinking regions, home to Britain’s largest LGBTQ+ community, England’s first Green Party MP was elected in Sussex.
The area has always been considered a hub for creativity, attracting writers, musicians, movie makers and artists. Brighton has long been home to big stars, while areas around Chichester have their fair share of A-lister. Ringo Star, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Sir Ian McKellen and Tom Cruise have all lived in Sussex.
If you’re looking to get out and about you can explore the South Downs National Park or the many fascinating places such as Ashdown Forest where you’ll find 100 Acre Wood, home to Winnie the Pooh.

Things to Do
Drusillas Zoo
One of the UK’s most charming small zoos. Starting life as a farm with a few tractors for kids to play on, today it is one of the region’s best attractions and a great family day out.
Brighton Pier
Brighton’s best loved attraction, the pier holds a fairground, bars, shops and of course fish and chips. A great place for a stroll both in the daytime and on a sunny evening.
Bodiam Castle
Arguably the most picturesque castle in the whole of the UK, Bodiam Castle is a stunning example of the ‘classic’ castle with its turrets, moat and huge, imposing walls.
Cuckmere Haven
From Seaford take in the iconic view of the coastguard cottages and the Seven Sisters cliffs. Then it’s a stroll (downhill) to the Seven Sisters Country Park at Cuckmere Haven.
