    Datchet – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. Down To The River
Datchet was an important ferry crossing across the River Thames. It was favoured by royals looking for a faster route to Windsor Castle from London. In 1249 Henry III ordered a giant oak tree from Great Windsor Forest to make a royal barge for his express use when crossing.
    2. Datchet At War
During the Second World War the War Department’s Radio Research Station was based at Datchet’s Ditton Park. Radar had previously been demonstrated in 1935 by Datchet resident Watson Watt but dismissed by government boffins before it went on to play a key role in the Battle of Britain and was eventually described as ‘the most decisive weapon of the war’.
    3. Me & Mrs Simpson
The Pavilion Club along the riverside was a popular venue for well-connected London socialites and attracted big stars such as Dame Vera Lynn. Edward VIII used the club for secret rendezvous with Mrs Wallace Simpson before eventually giving up the throne to be with the woman he loved.
    4. Name Game
Datchet is one of the few places in England whose name is derived from its Celtic roots and the name survived the arrival of the Romans, Saxons and Normans. Bronze Age, Roman and Saxon, artefacts including weapons and jewellery have all been dredged from the Thames close to Datchet.
    5. Who You Gonna Call?
The Royal Stag pub has a paranormal tale to tell. Despite cleaning and even having the panes of glass changed, one window has reportedly been marked by a mysterious reoccurring child’s handprint that lasts days or even weeks no matter how often the shammy leather is applied. Local stories say in the 1800s a father left his child outside the pub during a snowstorm while he went into the pub for a drink. The child had been knocking at the window before she succumbed to the cold. Jerome K Jerome mentions the Royal Stag in his novel Three Men in Boat.
    6. Bad To The Bone
In the 1800s Datchet had so many ‘braggards and scoundrels’ living there that Aylesbury County Jail had what the jailors called the ‘Datchet Wing’ to house the village’s drunks, petty villains and poachers.
