    Theale – 5 Quirky Facts

    1. Cranes, Trains & Automobiles
Theale’s history and biggest events have all related to the comings and goings of goods through the village. In 1723 the Kennet Navigation canal opened which brought heavy goods and employment to the villagers (yay!). The arrival of the railway in 1847 had a dramatic effect the Kennet and Avon Canal which had opened in 1810 and saw a large downturn in the number of barges stopping here (booo!). Finally in 1974 the M4 motorway opened, this meant huge decrease in traffic (especially goods vehicles) passing through the village and tranquillity returned at last (yay!)
    2. Stand & Deliver!
Theale was a major stop on the Bath to London road with a number of coaching ins. The route was a turnpike, meaning travellers had to pay use the road. The idea of charging passers-by became very popular… with highwaymen, who often prowled close to Theale.
    3. Just Passing
Theale has always been seen as a stopping point rather than a destination. The village sits on the crossroads of two major ancient routes. Both of these predated the Romans (what did they ever do for us?) but one of these roads running north to south through the Chiltern Hills, became a major Roman road. The two routes continued to be important through the ages for the Saxons, stagecoaches and during various wars. The Bath Road was used by troops in the Civil War, armies from both sides during the Anarchy, saw the arrival of William of Orange and marked the retreat of Alfred the Great.
    4. Dick Turpin
One colourful local tales is that of the most famous highwayman of them all, Dick Turpin. According to pub room myth, Turpin used a hidden secret room in the Old Lamb Inn to hide from the law. There are a huge number of Turpin stories and legends connecting him to Berkshire. It’s certainly true he operated in the area and in particular on the London to Bath road. He’s not the only one, the road was very popular with highwaymen and also highwaywomen, as the nefarious trade was equal opportunist employment, unlike most other jobs of the time.
    5. Ghost Pubsters!
The Old Lamb Inn is also said to be one of the most haunted pubs in the country. The pub dates back to 1487 and is so haunted there are even regular ghost hunts with paranormal investigators. So, who you gonna call?
