    Wantage – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. Great!
Wantage was once a Saxon palace/stronghold and is most famous for being the birthplace of Alfred the Great in 849AD. Wessex was the last kingdom that didn’t fall into Viking hands and it was Alfred who stood against the Vikings at Edington which finally turned the Norse tide. It was also Alfred’s vision of a united ‘Englaland’ that brought peace to the country and led the way for his grandson Athelstan to become the first King of England.
    2. The Wantage Code
The Wantage Code was a series of laws drawn up by Athelstan which related to things such as breach of the peace and theft. The code had a particular use of Scandinavian vocabulary, which many suggest shows the laws were aimed in part at keeping Vikings settlers who had stayed in Britain, under some kind of law and order.
    3. Robin Fitzwarin
The Fitzwarin family were noble born and Fulk Fitzwarin grew up alongside Prince John, there are even tales of the two of them squabbling and fighting as young boys. However, Fulk’s family home, Wittington Castle on the English/Welsh border had been stolen from him. With his four sons Fulk became something of an outlaw after his boyhood friend and now King John refused to return his castle and titles. Living in woodland and determined to retrieve his family home, he even fought running battles with the Sheriff of Shropshire. Eventually Fulk sailed to France with King John and fought for the King before once again falling out of favour. Yes, keen readers will already have noticed a similarity with another famous outlaw and it’s believed that part of the Robin Hood myth owes its roots to the Fitzwarins.
    4. Oh No He Didn’t!
The Fitzwarin story doesn’t end there. The church bears several ancient plaques and monuments to various Fitzwarins who continued to live in Wantage. One of them, Ivo Fitzwarin, born in 1444, was a Lord, ealdorman, former soldier, London merchant, and the father of Alice Fitzwarin who married another famous person. His name was Dick Wittington.
    5. John Betjeman
Another notable resident was Sir John Betjeman. The poet Laureate lived in the town for a number of years and even penned poems about the town and has been immortalised in street names. During his time in Wantage he even released several albums of his works (which can still be found on sites like YouTube). So yeah, Wantage is rock and roll!
    6. Walk It Off
Today there are a series of heritage trails and nature walks within the town and surrounding area. If you’re keen to explore the landscape and learn a few interesting facts about the town along the way, then drop by the Vale and Download Museum for maps/guides and information.
