Banbury Facts – Did you know…

    1. Fine Lady
The original cross mentioned in the nursery rhyme Ride A Cock Horse To Banbury Cross was torn down by the puritans in 1600. A new cross was erected in 1859 and in 2005 a statue added depicting the ‘fine lady’.
    2. Mmmmm Cakes
A local delicacy, Banbury cakes contain fruit and spices and are guilt free as the calories don’t count if you eat them in Banbury (although our legal department have asked us to point out we have no formal dietary credentials).
    3. Clockwork Orange
Playwright and novelist Anthony Burgess taught at Banbury Grammar School during the 1950s. It was during this time that he wrote his first play before going on to write A Clockwork Orange.
    4. John Craven
Another local famous face is national treasure and broadcaster John Craven, the former Newsround and Countryfile presenter lives close to the town and has filmed locally on several occasions.
    5. Spooky
The area has also been a hotspot for UFO sightings. Also ghostly visions of the Battle of Edgehill around the anniversary of the English Civil War battle which took place on October 23rd, 1642. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

    About

Ghostly battles, UFO sightings, pretty poetry and stunning countryside, this historic market town has so many quirks and charms it’s easy to see just why it’s such a sought-after location. The charming town centre retains many older buildings that today are home to a variety of independent stores and services for those that like to shop local.

‘B’bury’ is also making great strides in becoming eco-friendly and protecting its green spaces. There are cycle paths for greener commutes and open spaces for keeping fit or simply enjoying the great outdoors.

    Leisure

Locals can enjoy a cinema, art centre, parks and a famous market which sells everything from fresh produce to household necessities and pet supplies. Those staying in shape can head to the leisure centre or visit one of the many riding centres in the area. Golfers have a choice of courses and there are rivers for walks, fishing or artists.
