    Banbury – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. Ride A Cock Horse
      Banbury’s biggest claim to fame is the nursery rhyme “Ride A Cock Horse To Banbury Cross”. Sadly the original cross was torn down by the puritans in 1600 (a new one was built in 1859), but in 2005 a statue was erected in the town centre of the ‘fine lady’.Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross,
      To see a fine lady upon a white horse;
      Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,
      And she shall have music wherever she goes.
    2. Banbury Cakes
      While we love a good poem as much as the next man, we’re also huge fans of cake. So if we were to pick our one favourite Banbury fact it would be the excellent Banbury cakes. Similar to a rock cake or Eccles cake, they are little bundles of sweet, spiced, fruity goodness, because calories don’t count if you’re eating a geographically accurate cake. (Although our legal department have asked us to point out we have no dietary credentials and with our buffet addiction, we probably shouldn’t be listened to for health advice!)
    3. Clockwork Orange
      Playwright and novelist Anthony Burgess taught at Banbury Grammar School during the 1950s. It was during this time that he wrote his first play before going on to complete works including A Clockwork Orange.
    4. John Craven
      Another local ‘face’ belongs to national treasure and broadcaster John Craven, the former Newsround and Countryfile presenter lives close to the town and has used the area for filming locations. It was John Craven who created the idea of Newsround after noticing kids switched off during news shows, so wanted to produce a show that would appeal to kids. It was the first news show where newsreaders didn’t always sit behind a desk. Craven also claims it was Newsround that first coined the ‘And finally…” closing light-hearted news story (something hotly contested by ITN).
    5. Ghostly Goings On
      The area is a well-known for strange reports. It’s a hotspot for UFO sightings and there have also been a number of spectral incidents including apparitions of the Battle of Edgehill that have occurred around the anniversary of the Civil War battle which took place on October 23rd 1642.
