    Chesham Facts – Did you know…

    1. Chesham BCE
      The earliest traces of people moving to Chesham date back to 5,000 BCE. Archaeological finds suggest there was a settlement through the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and later a Roman villa.
    2. In writing
      The first written evidence for the location appeared in the 10th century.
    3. Beers
      At one time the town was renowned for beer. Its breweries helped keep London hydrated during a period when most water wasn’t safe to drink.
    4. Bears
      It was also home to The Chiltern Toy Works which made much-loved teddy bears along with other toys.
    5. War
      During the English Civil War the town was the headquarters of the Earl of Warwick and his troops. In 1798, 800 local men formed a militia to defend should Napoleon invade England.
    6. What is it good for…
      During WWI the town was the HQ for the Kings Royal Rifles, while the Royal Engineers used local bridges for training. In WWII 45 bombs fell on Chesham killing 9 people.
    7. Famous Folk
      Famous faces to have lived here, include national treasure Stephen Fry, the ‘Father of the NHS’ Nye Bevan, writer DH Lawrence, football manager Eddie Howe, and Lord Mountbatten to name but a few.

    25 miles from London and with 23 Grade II listed buildings, 17th century pubs, Chesham is a picturesque and sought-after location nestled in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

    The town wears its varied history well, mixing its old-world charm with modern commerce and a fine selection of independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as a lively events calendar.

    If you’re keen to stay in shape, the town has great spaces and facilities. There are two cycling trails cutting through spectacular scenery. There are also great areas for walking, running and riding including Captains Wood, Pednor Valley and the quirkily named Herberts Hole. Plus, sports fields, play areas, open air gyms. The leisure centre features a gym, two swimming pools, cycling studio, sports hall and more.

    Elvira Theatre & Cinema are at the centre of a lively arts scene which includes a comedy festival. Other festivities loved by locals are a Christmas festival, annual schools’ parade and weekly market. Historians can gen up at Chesham Museum.
