    Chesham – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. Chesham BC
The earliest traces of habitation in Chesham date back to 5,000BC. Archaeological finds suggest the there were probably settlements through the Neolithic era, Bronze Age, Iron Age and also a Roman villa. However, the first written evidence of what is now Chesham as a town comes from the latter part of the 10th century.
    2. Beers & Bears
One of the town’s most popular products was beer. The town had a number of breweries and helped keep London hydrated (at a time when most water wasn’t safe to drink). Chesham has also produced brushes, flour and at one point had a large toy manufacturer, The Chiltern Toy Works, principally making teddy bears.
    3. In the Wars
While today a calm, tranquil town, Chesham has had a turbulent past. Like much of Buckinghamshire it was heavily involved in the Civil War and had a large number of troops garrisoned in the town and was the headquarters of John Pym and the Earl of Warwick. In 1798, 800 men of the town signed up to a militia to defend the town should Napoleon invade England. During the WWI the town was the headquarters of the Kings Royal Rifles and the Royal Engineers used local bridges to train on, and in WWII 45 bombs fell on Chesham killing 9 people.
    4. Famous Folk
A number of famous names have lived in Chesham, author, actor, broadcaster Stephen Fry, the ‘Father of the NHS’ Nye Bevan, writer DH Lawrence, Premier League football manager Eddie Howe, and Lord Mountbatten to name but a few.
    5. Chesham Vs Hollywood
Ok, it might not have a hilltop sign but Chesham has had its share of screen time. The town has appeared in TV and movies including The Imitation Game, Doctor Foster, Cuckoo, Inspector Morse, Midsomer Murders, Black Mirror, Chucklevision and even Hammer House of Horrors.
    6. Going Underground
Chesham is on the London underground map. It has a station in Zone 9 forming part of the Metropolitan Line. Commuters can find the station in Station Road, HP5 1BP.
