    Cobham – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. Back In The Day
According to the Domesday Book, in 1086 Cobham consisted of 35 households with 29 villages, 6 cottagers, 1 acre of meadow and was worth the princely sum of £14 pounds. Today that would just about buy you a nice lunch (and there are plenty of great places to eat!). By 1848 the number of residents had risen to 1617.
    2. All Very Hush Hush
During WWII the Vickers Experimental Department was based near Redhill Road. Among the vital and revolutionary work they did was one particular invention that became part of WWII folklore. Barnes Wallis and his team worked on the ‘bouncing bomb’ in Cobham that was at the centre of the now famous Dambusters raid.
    3. Va Va Voom!
Cobham has also had a long association with motor racing. Nearby Brooklands Airfield provided the tarmac but it was local skill and ingenuity that created a number of fast cars for Formula Ford, BMW Saloon Cars and Graham Hill’s F2 car. You can find out more at the Brooklands Museum.
    4. Blue Is The Colour
Another sporting claim to fame is Cobham’s association with Chelsea Football Club. The ‘Blues’ training ground is in Cobham and some of England’s greatest footballing talents have come through the ranks at Chelsea, who have developed a production line of boot room excellence. John Terry, Frank Sinclair, Graeme Le Saux, Ryan Bertrand, Declan Rice, Tammy Abraham and Ray Wilkins were all former academy players.
    5. Talk Talk
One curious landmark is Chatley House Semaphore Tower. In the days before the world wide web (yes kids, there was life before t’internet!) a series of towers was built to relay messages between The Admiralty in London and the naval dockyards and command centre in Portsmouth, using a series of flags. Known as ‘semaphore’, the same system was how shops once communicated while at sea.
    6. Anarchy!
In the 1640s a group of locals earned the nickname the Cobham Diggers. Inspired by biblical stories, they set about levelling the land to create farmland and socialist, rural community to give common folk simple rights and accessibility to food. This was where the term ‘Levellers’ came from. All this came on the back of the English Civil War when common men were conscripted to fight but after the war, having removed the King they found nothing had changed for commonfolk and so a number of groups rose up to confront the regime. In Cobham they did it with spades and a number of curiously marked graves (look for symbols of spades) and monuments can still be found in the area. They were considered the first anarchists.
