Cobham Facts – Did you know…

    1. ‘Ow Much?!?
According to the Domesday Book, in 1086 Cobham consisted of 35 households with 29 villages, 6 cottagers, 1 acre of meadow and was worth the princely sum of £14 pounds. By 1848 the number of residents had risen to 1,617.
    2. Dam Busters
During WWII the Vickers Experimental Department was based near Redhill Road. It was here that Barnes Wallis and his team worked on the ‘bouncing bomb’ which was used in the famous Dam Busters raids.
    3. Va Va Voom!
Cobham has had a long association with motor racing. RAF Brooklands later became Brooklands Racetrack. ‘Petrolheads’ can find out more at the Brooklands Museum.
    4. Talk Talk
Chatley House Semaphore Tower is part of a series of towers which used flags to relay messages between The Admiralty in London and the naval dockyards in Portsmouth.
    5. Blue Day
Another sporting claim to fame is Cobham’s association with Chelsea Football Club. The ‘Blues’ training ground has welcomed talents like John Terry, Didier Drogba, Declan Rice and of course the ‘Special One’, Jose Mourinho.
    6. Anarchy In The UK
In the 1640s a group of locals were branded the Cobham Diggers. These rebellious, 17th century socialists set about levelling areas of private land, to create farmland, giving common folk a chance to grow their own food. A number of curiously marked graves (look for symbols of spades) and monuments honour these early anarchists, also referred to as ‘Levellers’.
