    Farnham Facts
    Did you know…

    1. Dig for England
The first settlers arrived in the Stone Age. During the Roman era it was a centre for pottery and occasionally pieces are still unearthed.
    2. Hop Hop Hooray!
Much of the town’s growth and wealth came from the cultivating hops for beer. “No, I’m not drinking, I’m exploring Farnham’s cultural heritage”.
    3. Mother Ludlam
Reputed to be a white witch, Mother Ludlam lived in ‘Ludlam’s Cave’. A spring that came from the cave was chosen as the site to build Waverly Abbey.
    4. For Keeps
Built in 1136, both Queen Elizabeth I and James I visited Farnham Castle. It was occupied by parliamentarians in the English Civil War and used as a training camp in WWII.
    5. Lost Boys
JM Barrie wrote Peter Pan while living in Black Lake Cottage. Originally called The Boy Castaways of Black Lake Island, the idea was based on his neighbours’ children. The cottage is now called Lobswood House.
    6. Fame-ham
A number of celebrities to have completed their Farnham removals to call the town home include; Johnny Wilkinson, Jim Sturgess, Graham Thorpe, Michael Ball, John Noakes, Roger Taylor and Sir Trevor McDonald.
    7. Workhouse
Once a hospital, the medical centre was originally the local workhouse for orphans, unmarried mothers and the poor.

    About

People have lived on the site of the modern town through the ages. From the Bronze Age, Roman invaders, Saxons and through both World Wars, the town has a rich history to discover.

    Leisure

There’s a great selection of indie and artisan shops including bakeries, a farmers market, antique stores and more. The Maltings features an outdoor cinema or you can take in a show at the Aldridge Theatre, while history buffs can explore the castle and museum.

The area has a number of parks, gardens, country estates and parkland to get out into the great outdoors. If you’re feeling less energetic, you can enjoy the taste of Surrey at a delicious choice of pubs, restaurants and local producers.
