    7 Quirky Facts

    1. Peter Pan
JM Barrie was inspired to write Peter Pan while living in Blake Lake Cottage in Farnham. The original idea was based on his neighbours’ children and entitled The Boy Castaways of Black Lake Island. The house still stands but is today called Lobswood House.
    2. Workhouse
The current medical centre was once a hospital, however it history stretches back further as it was originally the local workhouse for orphans, unmarried mothers and the poor.
    3. Dig for England
Farnham dates back to the Stone Age, in Roman times it was a centre for pottery and occasionally pieces are still unearthed. Worth bearing in mind when you start work on that vegetable patch, you could find hidden treasures.
    4. Hop Hop Hooray!
Much of the town’s growth and wealth came from the growing and drying of hops for beer. So when you’re next having a pint what you’re actually doing is celebrating Farnham’s heritage (“Honest guv’nor!”).
    5. Fame-ham
Farnham has been home to a number of celebrities including; Johnny Wilkinson (rugby player), Jim Sturgess (actor), Brenda Longman (voice of Sooty’s friend Sue), Graham Thorpe (cricketer), Michael Ball (singer), John Noakes (Blue Peter presenter), Roger Taylor (drummer) and Sir Trevor McDonald (newsreader).
    6. Mother Ludlam
One local legend tells the tale of ‘Mother Ludlam’, a white witch believed to live in a cave that was the original site of the spring that was chosen as the site to build Waverly Abbey.
    7. King Lud
Ludlam’s Cave originally earned its name after being visited by King Lud, leader of the South Saxon’s. King Lud’s name is also where the moniker ‘London’ derives from.
