    Sunningdale – 7 Quirky Facts

    1. Famous Faces
A few well known ‘celebs’ have made Sunningdale their home including; Agatha Christie (author), Gary Lineker (England football and BBC sports presenter), Anna Friel (actress), Cliff Richard (singer), Billy Ocean (singer), Darren Clarke (golfer), Chesney Hawkes (The One and Only), Brian Blessed (actor AND INCREDIBLY LARGE VOICE!).
    2. An Agatha Christie Mystery
On the 4th of December 1926 the famous mystery writer Agatha Christie vanished from her Sunningdale home. Her car was found abandoned at the edge of a pit near Guildford and the story was headline news around the world. Local police even brought in one of the writer’s pets hoping it would be able to track her down. The police and press speculated she might have committed suicide while others pointed to evidence in a previous comment she had written to a friend about her feelings for her home, “It stands in a lonely lane, unlit at night, which has a reputation of being haunted. The lane has been the scene of a murder of a woman and the suicide of a man. …if I do not leave Sunningdale soon, Sunningdale will be the end of me.’. Over 10,000 people joined the hunt and amateur sleuths around the world tried to solve the mystery. Nine days after her disappearance, Christie was found at a spa in Harrogate, she had checked in under the name of her husband’s mistress. Nine months later she filed for divorce. Mystery solved!

One of the UK’s finest courses, Sunningdale has played host to some of the biggest names in golf including; Nick Faldo, Arnold Palmer, Darren Clarke, Seve Ballesteros, Greg Norman, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Laura Davies and Bronte Law. Major events have been held here such as The Walker Cup, The European Open, and The Ladies British Open. Other famous names to have played a round include; Gary Lineker, Michael Jordan and Samuel L. Jackson.

    5. Almost Hollywood
Sunningdale has appeared in a number of TV shows but these appearances are eclipsed by the arrival of Steven Spielberg who used a house in Sunningdale for a location is in his WWII epic Empire of the Sun that starred a young Christian Bale along with John Malkovich, and Nigel Havers.
    6. Sunningdale Agreement
On the 9th of December 1973 the Sunningdale Agreement was signed at Sunningdale Park in an attempt to calm ‘The Troubles’ in Northern Ireland which had resulted in paramilitary violence and a general strike. The talks brought together British Government ministers, the Unionist Party members of the Executive of the Republic Ireland. Sadly the agreement was short-lived and trouble flared again in 1974.
