If you’re looking for warmer climes and scenic beauty, but don’t want to sacrifice internet speed and culture, Taunton should be high on your list. Snuggled in the Somerset countryside is one of the south west’s gems, bristling with character and history while offering a vibrant economy.
You’d be hard pressed to better the selection of shops on offer within a short walk of the town centre. All the major chains are here, alongside fabulous independent stores and family businesses. Yet just a five-minute drive takes you right into stunning Somerset countryside.
One of the town’s biggest events, Taunton Flower Show is dubbed The Chelsea of the West and attracts 17,000 visitors. It’s said to be the longest running show in the country and attracts hundreds of exhibitors from all over the world to the popular Vivary Park.
Vivary Park is an important resource for residents, offering open spaces, a golf course, tennis courts and children’s playparks. There’s also a miniature golf course, railway and, fittingly for the site of Taunton Flower Show, it hosts the Royal National Rose Society’s provincial trial ground. Another major annual event is the carnival procession in November, part of the West Country Carnival circuit which includes Bridgwater and Glastonbury. Floats can cost £100,000 to build and the results are simply spectacular.
Many other events and a proud military history ensure Taunton is right up there for culture, making it one of the most popular places for city dwellers to relocate to.
Taunton is 38 miles south-west of Bristol, 28 miles north-east of Exeter, 63 miles north-east of Plymouth and 40 miles north-west of Weymouth. The train station is on three main lines and offers fast services to Birmingham, Bristol, London and Cardiff, as well as to Manchester and further afield. There is also a heritage line to Minehead, where the West Somerset Railway runs steam trains from Bishops Lydeard in the wider Taunton Deane area.
Road links are good, Taunton sits alongside the M5, but if speedy travel isn’t for you there’s also the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal.
