    Thatcham – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. Prehistoric
Thatcham is one of the oldest inhabited locations in the UK. Archaeologists have discovered items from the Palaeolithic era dating human habitation back 12,000 years. They found that early man was eating deer, elk, beaver, wild fowl, fox and even wolf meat! One excavation in the area literally changed history. Archaeologists found evidence of iron working dating 1,000 BC, that was 250 years before the Iron Age was believed to have started, hence a lot of scratching of heads and history books around the world having to be re-written.
    2. Romans
The town grew with the arrival of the Romans who built a road between Cirencester and Silchester that crossed the River Kennet where Thatcham now stands. When the Saxon’s appeared, they too recognised its strategic positioning and once again the town grew in size.
    3. Nasty Neighbours
When Thatcham became a market town in 1160AD the people of Newbury weren’t happy about it. In fact, the Newbury traders were so incensed that they marched to the town and destroyed the market stalls and attacked locals to dissuade them from pinching Newbury’s trade, which caused a pitched battle. Today relations between the towns are far more cordial.
    4. Camp 1001
During WWII Thatcham was home to a prisoner of war camp. Once again Newbury tried to do it better and had a POW camp on Newbury Racecourse where the prisoners were forced to sleep in horse stables (they had been mucked out first!). Camp 1001 at Crookham Common was purpose built and was largely unseen by the locals.
    5. Hardships
Things were tougher locally during the First World War and at one point rationing had gotten so tough that Thatcham had no tea for two weeks!
    6. Thatched Village
The earliest written record of the town dates back to around 975AD where the name was recorded as ‘Thaecham’. Ham meant a village or settlement, ‘thaec’ meant roof covering. With a number of reed beds in the area, it’s most likely that the roof coverings at the time were thatched (the word also deriving from the same Saxon origin).
