Thatcham Facts – Did you know…

    1. Any Old Iron Age
A group of archaeologists digging in the town found evidence of iron working dating back 1,000 BCE, 250 years before the Iron Age was believed to have started. This led to academic head scratching and history books around the world having to be re-written.
    2. Romans
The town grew with the arrival of the Romans who built a road between Cirencester and Silchester, crossing the River Kennet where Thatcham now stands. When the Saxons appeared, they too recognised its strategic positioning and once again the town grew in size.
    3. Nasty Neighbours
When Thatcham became a market town in 1160AD, the Newbury traders were so worried about losing trade that they stormed the town, destroyed the market stalls and attacked locals. Today relations between the towns are far more cordial.
    4. Camp 1001
During WWII it was home to a prisoner of war camp, Camp 1001 at Crookham Common. Once again Newbury tried to do it better and had a POW camp on Newbury Racecourse where prisoners slept in the stables.
    5. Hardships
Rationing hit the town hard during WWII and at one point Thatcham had no tea for two weeks!
    6. Thatched Village
The earliest written record of Thaecham dates back to around 975AD. Ham meant a village or settlement, ‘thaec’ meant roof covering. With a number of reed beds in the area, it’s most likely that the roof coverings at the time were ‘thatched’.

    About

54 miles West of London, this historic market town is one of the oldest inhabited locations in the UK, with evidence dating the site back over 12,000 years. It was in occupation during the Iron age, Roman occupation and Saxon era. A listed church dates back to 1304 and there’s modern history linking to the area’s wartime past.

Today the thriving commuter town has a busy events calendar, excellent amenities, local shops and good schools. There’s a football club, hockey, cricket and rugby clubs, sports ground, play areas and riding is also popular in the area.

    Leisure

The closest cinema can be found in nearby Newbury, Thatcham does have a small amateur theatre producing a number of shows each year. The town has good independent shops and excellent eateries. There are also societies covering a whole range of interests for those looking to get involved.

Outdoor types can enjoy sports fields, a leisure centre with gym and swimming pools and miles of unspoilt countryside right on the doorstep. You’ll also find golf courses and riding centres all close by.
