Choosing The Right Removals Company

No matter how far you are moving, choosing the right house removals company is a really important decision. A great removal firm will help make the move so much smoother and easier, and can drastically reduce the amount of stress both before and during your removal.

Not all companies operate in the same way, offer the same level of services, protection or are accredited and reputable. So here’s a quick check list of what to look out for. And happy moving!

Give yourself plenty of time.

Don’t leave it until the last minute. We often speak to people who didn’t realise just how early removals companies get booked up. Plan ahead, find the right company well in advance then you can relax knowing your possessions will be in safe hands and you won’t be left still searching for a (quality) removals firm a week before the big day. The best companies get booked early leaving less organised movers having to choose from the companies no else chose to book.

Moving Day Checklist

Ask about insurance.

You’ll want to ensure that all of your property is properly insured on the day of the move. Any removals firm worth using will have insurance in place to help protect your contents and also offer financial protection if things go wrong. You should also speak to your home contents insurer as they may offer additional coverage.

Removals Insurance

Discuss important details with potential movers.

Before speaking to any removals firms, make sure you properly understand your requirements. House moves are as individual as the houses and occupiers, every home has different priorities and most precious items. They also have their own demands (the size of house, overnight storage, packing services, packing materials, lofts and outbuildings – not all companies cover these). Also consider access and parking for your property and the type of vehicles. If you’re unsure of factors, give your removal surveyor as much information as possible and they’ll be able to guide you.

Removals Planning

Seek recommendations.

It’s a good idea to speak to any friends and relatives who have moved in your area and ask for recommendations on removals firms they used. They can give you an indication of pricing, quality of service and how things will proceed in the run up and on the day of your removal.

Thumbs Up

Check review websites.

There are several removal review websites, but beware, most of these websites charge for inclusion and positions are often based on fees rather than genuine reviews. Look for independent review sites like Which and Trustpilot, don’t just read reviews, read how a company responds to get an indication of whether they’re a company you’d like to do business with.

    Check their credentials.

We always advise using a member of the British Association of Removers, this shows they adhere to a strict code of conduct, undergo regular audits on their practices, follow environmental standards and staff training. Booking with a BAR remover also gives you a greater level of financial protection. Don’t just check the logo, make sure the company is really a member (yes, it’s an extra 5 minutes, but they will be moving your entire lifetime of possessions so it’s best to be sure).

    Moving Day Planning

    Collect a number of quotes.

There is nothing wrong with shopping around for a good deal, so be sure to speak to a number of companies before settling on one. This will help you to get a firm understanding of exactly what services are on offer and what is a reasonable price to expect to pay.

    Removals Advice

    Be prepared to negotiate.

If you like the sound of a few companies, then feel free to ask for a deal. Some firms aren’t flexible on pricing but others may be. Either way, it’s not usually worth going to the cheapest provider. Instead, you need to consider the quality of service you will actually receive, including the fleet of vehicles they offer.

    Decide what’s important.

Is it price, experience, extra services, storage options, the sales rep, local knowledge, one key factor could be the decider. It could be green credentials, more and more new movers want their relocation to have less impact on the environment. Armishaws are market leaders in Greener Removals.
